Watercolor Techniques for Beginners

Modified on Wed, 15 Oct at 3:12 PM

Watercolor is all about flow, transparency, and expression. Here are a few beginner techniques to try:

  • Wet-on-Wet: Apply water to the paper first, then drop in paint to create soft, diffused effects.

  • Wet-on-Dry: Paint directly onto dry paper for sharper, more controlled lines.

  • Dry Brush: Use a barely-damp brush for scratchy, textured marks.
Lifting: Use a clean, damp brush or tissue to lift paint and create highlights.

  • Layering (Glazing): Wait for one layer to dry, then add another wash on top to build depth and detail.
